CoF: monsters 101
By now you've probably noticed: Silent Hill has monsters.
A lot of monsters. As your characters travel, they WILL see and be forced to fight with monsters. As the town is a sort of purgatory you can andshould make up some of your own monsters, monsters unique to your character's fears and histories. If you feel you have a truly cool monster, give one of the mods a holler and we'll stick it in this here compendium. In the meanwhile, here are some of the common ones from the games, and a few from other games, movies, etc. we thought would be fun to spring on y'all.
A few other things to note: boss monsters from the games are not included. Why? Because, like some of these monsters actually, the boss monsters come from the psyches of the game characters. Really each inhabitant of Silent Hill
should see all new, all unique monsters. But, as we can't go ahead without some kind of a compendium, we took the liberty of using the everyday ones, but not the bosses. Still. Your C sees what it sees. Feel free to use all or none of these descriptions as what your C is seeing, but in a group log, chances are everyone else is seeing one of these universals.
Also?
No one is exempt from seeing monsters. As none of you are playing innocent children, your Cs ALL have guilt somewhere within them, and this town feeds upon guilt to generate these things. Even children born
within the cult see monsters (although outsider's kids don't; see Laura, SH2), so your C WILL have to face creatures sooner or later!
and now, the compendium:
HOSPITAL CREATURES
these nurses make me sick!
Bobble Head Nurse(SH2)-just plain weird lookin'. Usually pipe wielding. The nurses wear suggestive, low-cut outfits and have heavily
distorted and grotesquely swollen faces, that jitter and twitch uncontrollably.
Nurse(SH3)-zombie like.May wield pipes or even guns.
Parasitized Doctors or Nurses(SH1)-bent over, with obvious parasites attached to their bodies. These usually wield scalpels.
Danger! The parasites CAN be transfered to other live hosts if not properly squashed.
Patients(burpers)(SH4)-Extremely tall, feminine monsters that carry powerful meleé weapons they swing savagely before themselves. One fun thing about attacking them back is make strange belching noises when hit or when they fall down stairs.
Wheelchairs(SH4)-Yep. You heard me. In a haunted hospital, even the wheelchairs might have minds of their own.
-----------
baaad DOGS
.
Sez Heather:
The staple of every survivor horror. The fear of dogs and death combined. They typically go for the face. Those sharp teeth and dog breath...having these things eat your face would not be pleasant. Of course, being dogs their bites have a nasty grasp, and can cause tearing, aggrivated damage. Bite won't turn you undead tho (unless you believe it will, or it's one of the Resident Evil cereberus types!) Silent Hill has many types of mutated and undead pooches; see the listing below.
Double Head(SH3)-Ineptly bandaged flayed dogs that have heads
that split vertically in half. They will howl and quickly pursue anyone they see.
Groaner(SH1)-zombie dogs.Demonic dogs with decaying flesh. They
are fast, nimble, and attack in packs.
Sniffer dog(SH4)-Dog-like creatures that have long, prehensile tongues which resemble umbilical cords that they use to drain their prey of blood. They have dirty, leathery yellowish skin.
Wormhead(SH1)-Similar to the Groaners but are faster and stronger. The effect of the shift to the otherworld causes its head to become completely covered in worms.
Colmillos(Resident Evil4) (from Spanish, meaning fangs) are wolves that have been implanted with Plaga parasites. They act like guard dogs for the Ganados. The player will meet both regular Colmillos, and Colmillos in which the plagas are more obviously developed, displaying flailing tentacles which attack with multiple strikes in succession.
----------
MONKEYS
sez Vincent:
The only kind we don't seem to have yet is flying ones, but wait...it'll happen. 9.9
-----------------
Gumheads(SH4)-A rotting, ape-like zombie creature. Some hold and use golf clubs as weapons. If they can strike you, they will steal YOUR melee weapon and use it against you.
Romper(SH1)-Gorilla-like creatures that are fast, deadly and very difficult to kill. They like to pounce and, upon knocking you down, snuffle at and sometime bite at their victim's face or neck.
Better to run from these than take a stand.
------------------
FLYERS
Air Screamer(SH1)Pterodactyl-like demons that appear to be either skinless or burned. Says Heather:
These lovely flyers typically take seven rounds from a normal pistol to kill. They would not make wonderful pets and your mom would not approve of one in her house. Well, unless she is weird and likes dangerous flying clawing birds that would do more then peck your eyes out. Floatstinger(SH1)(giant moth)sez Vincent:
Hope you don't have
any nice clothing socked away anywhere... 'Adult' form of Twin feelers.
Hummer(SH4)-Something like a bat meets a mosquito by way of a oil soaked bird. These buzz like mosquitos and attack the head. They can be easily knocked out of the air and crushed, however. Vincent claims a goodly many Wish House kids ate these in lieu of the nasty food served (when food WAS served) by the elders. He also swears they taste like chicken.
Pendulum(SH3)-Two conjoined torsos on stilt-like legs, armed with blades. They can either walk around on its stilt-legs, or can fly by spinning and make a noisy screeching sound like that of grinding metal. Vincent calls these 'Silent Hill mosquitos' due to their sound, and fondness for blood. Quite dangerous. VERY deadly in groups. Easier to run from than fight.
Ravens-Yes, these lovely birds will peck anything to death. They also stay in numbers. It is rumored they can sense your sin and are always watching. Their presence here may be due to Fakir and Ahiru, who dealt with heart-stealing ravens in their world, but let's face it- aggressive, intelligent birds have been a horror staple since Alfred Hitchcock.
sez Vincent:
Thus far not a one of them has ever taken to sitting on statues and saying 'nevermore'Everything else.
Abstract Daddy(SH2)-The Abstract Daddy's appearance
suggests rape. It looks like a walking bed, with a large humanoid figure and a smaller figure struggling under the covers.has four legs which are used to approach a victim. The creature lifts its body and reveals a "mouth" that is used to attack. Sez Vincent:
These things will hump your head!Ariel - A theatre mannequin of a child, Ariel hangs upside-down from the ceiling or walks along the ground on its hands. They are distinguished by the rattling sound they produce, and can easily be avoided by turning your flashlight off. However, they tend to appear in pairs or groups and are able to use a grappling maneuver that will result in an instant Game Over if you don't get free statt. When hanging from the ceiling, Ariel will attempt to pick up a person by his head and break his neck.
Ash Children(SHmovie)-These take the form of badly deformed children, but like the castings taken of victims from Pompeii, they are form only; their entire body is made of ash.
Still burning ash; if seen in the dark you will notice the glow thru parts of them and realize this is basically a sentient, still smouldering ember. Do not!! let them touch you.
Carrion - Large, reanimated creature that appears to be a skinned cow or bull, dragging its head and two front limbs along the ground. Although the creatures are quite slow and can be easily out run, they pack a mean wallop if they do strike you.
Crawlers(aka troglodytes)(fr. the film 'The Descent')
These aggressive albino creatures live in the mines. They eat what they catch and are excellent climbers.
They are strong and attack in packs. They are also blind, so they rely on smell and hearing.
These are what Juno purported killed her and her spelunking crew, so it is likely their arrival in Silent Hill is a manifestation of her fear, although others have since seen the creatures.
Sez Heather:
Gee, thanks Juno, nice addition. Creeper (giant roaches)(SH1,2,3)-Insect-like creatures that resemble large cockroaches. Vincent has inferred they have some sort of latent intelligence. They tend to attack in groups, one distracting as another bites the victim's ankles.
CrimsonHead is a type of zombie (officially named the V-ACT by Umbrella). After the T-Virus infects a human being, it causes a decline in brain activity. Should the new zombie be incapacitated, after a time its tissue regenerates. The T-Virus causes further necrosis and terrible blood seepage, giving the zombie its crimson skin, small claws, increased resistance to firearms, slightly increased intelligence and a more aggressive attitude. Capable of running and jumping, a Crimson Head presents a significant threat.
Closer/Mandarin(SH2,3)-Lumbering, giant-armed monster with great strength and reach. It attacks by swinging it arms slowly, knocking the victim back. Large, bony spikes are hidden in their arms and cause a large amount of damage when used.
Festers(The Suffering)-This bloated monster is somewhat reminiscent of an
Insane cancer only much, much bigger. Luckily found only near the lake bank, the Fester is the return of lost souls who were allowed to die by drowning in the hold of slave ships. The bodies then bloated and were fed upon by rats aboard the ship. These creatures attack with the shackle balls they wore in life and only explosives will kill them. Look out! Once exploded, the bloated bodies open up to allow rats within them to burst forth and attack like heat seeking missiles, rats which explode on impact with the victim.
Flesh Lip(SH2)-Lattice-based monster that hangs from the ceiling and attacks by strangling passersby with their legs.
Garrador are Plagas-infected warriors who wear equipment resembling that worn by gladiators. The Garradors are equipped with large claws on each hand, which can be extended and retracted at will. The Garrador will indiscriminately attack anyone and anything in its path and are usually kept under restraint. Garradors are blind, and rely on their sense of hearing to track down intruders, and are easily distracted by loud noises. Garradors will become enraged when very loud noises are made, and are prone to charging in the direction of the noise and striking at its source.
Ghosts- Well, we all know what ghosts are. There are as many types of ghosts as there are live denizens of Silent Hill, and of course some of them are known to the live people. Not all ghosts are evil, although too-close contact with any of them can be
chi-draining. All of the ghosts can also be weakened by holy candles and saint medallions; ghosts can be staked down with the 'Sword of Obedience', although these are hard to find. As the swords are rare, one will usually want them back! So staking a ghost is only a good solution if you know you're only passing through an area once.
Grey Children(SH1)- Knife-wielding demon children. They look as though they have a gaping hole where their face should be.
Hanged Scratcher (sewer monster)(SH1)-Found in the sewers. They usually ambush in numbers and can be difficult to kill. They resemble an overgrown praying mantis.
Hunters - Hunters are bipedal humanoid reptilian creatures with large claws and teeth, and are noted for their agility as well as the loud shrieking noises they make when they encounter and pursue prey. They are actually B.O.W.s designed by the Umbrella Corporation by combining a fertilized human ovum with reptilian DNA and then implanting the T-Virus into the resulting creature. Their thick, scaly hide grants them limited resistance to regular firearms. Moreover, they are capable of killing a human by decapitation (a feat typically achieved by leaping over or past the intended victim; the creature's claws take the victim's head with it) or by swallowing whole, as with the MA-124 Hunter Gamma models.
Insane Cancer(SH3)-Heather sez:
Oh we love these. How much gas would they pass when they deflate. Images of gagging from the expulsion totally fill my mind. Almost seems more deadly, those things dying. Ofcourse their thomps are dangerous. Bearing the resemblence of skinned fat men with grotesque paleness these deflating creatures run in spurts and fall down. Usually if caught by one though their damage is pretty severe.(also see Festers)Las Plagas(
Resident Evil 4)-New, fun parasites come to us due to the newcomers from Umbrella. Las Plagas (Spanish for "The Plagues") are parasitic creatures that grow in the body of a human, and control the behavior of the host. Humans infested with Las Plagas remain outwardly normal.
The Plagas were sealed deep under the castle by the first castellan. When the Plagas were unearthed, they seemed to have been fossilized. However, they had actually been in a dormant state.Soon they infected the miners who found them.
Las Plagas are extremely sensitive to light, only coming out of the host's body when it has sustained a lot of damage, or if its head is destroyed. The head of the host may either be destroyed completely and replaced by the parasite, or the parasite may emerge from the mouth or neck of the victim; however, due to their photosensitivity, Las Plagas can be destroyed with the use of a bright light source such as a flash grenade.
Licker The creature got its name from its most distinguishing characteristic, its long sharp tongue which it uses to attack its prey. The licker can stretch it in order to penetrate the human's chest. Its brain and musculature are exposed. They do not have eyes and have to rely on their acute sense of hearing to detect prey. Lickers are quadrupedal and can climb walls.
Lying Figure (patient demon)(SH2,movie)-Skulking, humanoid demons trapped in straitjackets made from their own flesh. They attack by spewing a spray of acidic liquid from a hole in their chest. They are slow whilst standing upright, but when knocked down they stay in a lying position and move by skittering very quickly along the ground.

Mainliner(The Suffering)-These pathetic little creatures have malformed limbs and are covered in hypodermic needles- even their eyesockets have
needles jabbed into them, needleside out! Their attack, however, is devastating; the needles which wound the creature are also its weapons, which it uses both as a thrown projectile, and also as a stabbing weapon when it jumps on and grapples with its victim. What's in those needles? PTV? poison? whatever it is, it can and will weaken your character, altering their vision and making their movement sluggish. Mainliners NEED liquid both to appear and thrive in; dry up any puddles or shut off any taps, and they are easy enough to dispatch.
Sez Vincent:
Never saw these in the Hill before! Curt saw them when he first arrived. I'm guessing they tend to manifest mostly for those who have had problems with addiction?
Mannequin(SH2)-These monsters consist of a feminine human torso and legs, upon which rest two more legs standing upright.
The top pair of legs are used for striking while the bottom pair are
used for walking.
Mumbler(SH1)- Humanoid creatures that look somewhat like a teddy bear with giant claws.Usually found in the sewers.
Numb Body(SH3)-A relatively featureless, bipedal creature which
resembles a headless, featherless, wingless chicken or possibly a fetus. They attack by bumping victims with their heads. They don't seem to be able to bite, however. More annoying than dangerous, altho a blow could conceivably bruise or break bones.
Scraper(missionary)(SH3)- A humanoid creature wielding two large, rusty blades. It has a head that looks like many folded layers of flesh and quivers rapidly. Some say these were once human, members of Claudia Wolf's followers who broke off from Vincent's church back in the day...
Slurper(SH3)- - Crawling, anteater-like creatures
with great speed. Their face is long and pointed, like that of a rat,
and loud noises attract its attention. They often pretend to be dead in order to surprise you. They knock their victim down, or cling to ones legs, earning them the nicname 'beggars'. These too were purported to once be human. More annoying than deadly, but if they get you down they CAN suffocate you, or leave you open to attack from other monsters prowling nearby.
Toadstools(SH4)-A snake-like demonic fungus that grows in tight groups.Vincent's pet name for them is 'evil spaghetti' due to the nasty wet sound they make and overall appearance. Don't bump into them tho. They seem to have jellyfishlike stinging abilities. A machete is helpful when entering areas these things grow.
Tremer(SH4)-Slug/giant leech things. Also more useful as a food
source than worrisome as a monster, tasting a bit like egg yolk (snails really do!) However, if you step on them or one falls on you it may do you some damage. They can burst easily, or be salted. Fun to kill, anyway.
Twin Feelers(SH1)-Basically giant flesh eating caterpillars.
They may be related to the parasites that infect the hospital staff.
Beware the powdered venom they spit.
Twin Victims(SH4)Walter Sullivan's seventh and eighth victims were twins Billy and Miriam Locane, children the murderer killed with an axe. This type of creature seems to have arisen as some bizarre manifestation of that horrid act.The twins' spirits have fused together, giving this monster its two heads. Because Billy and Miriam were the youngest of Walter's victims, the heads of the Twin Victim look disturbingly like calm infants' faces. However, they have no legs, and run on their hands, attacking by bitchslapping. This makes them easy to dispatch. Hella eerie to run across tho. When standing still, they often stand on one 'foot', pointing at whoever they run across.
Wall Man(SH4)-Wall Men take the texture of the walls that they come out of, usually with cables from within the wall pulling at them. When approached, they roar and take violent swipes at their victim, knocking them across the room. Because of their chameleonlike coloration, these can surprise you, but usually only the once. Step back, and attack them, for they cannot leave their posts.

and our favorite NPC...
Lisa Trevor - Lisa was born to Jessica and George Trevor in 1953. Several years after her birth, Ozwell E. Spencer, owner of the Umbrella Corporation, hired George to design a special mansion complex for him in the Arklay Mountains, which would also host a secret underground laboratory. Spencer eventually became paranoid that George would someday leak the mansion's secrets to the public, and ordered his henchmen to apprehend and execute George. Instead of being done away with immediately, George was thrown into a secret compartment of the mansion, and suffered a lonely demise.
While George was writhing in his eternal resting place, Lisa and Jessica were kidnapped by Spencer’s henchman, and used as human test subjects for the Progenitor virus. On November 10, 1967, Lisa was administered the “B-Type” variation of the Progenitor virus, while Jessica was administered the “A-Type” variation. Jessica’s bodily systems were able to fight off the virus, while Lisa body immediately began to exhibit signs of mutation. Over a period of time, both Lisa’s mental and physical state were grotesquely altered.
Lisa’s mental deterioration culminated when she began to develop a morbid obsession to remain with her mother. Ultimately, Lisa killed her mother by mutilating her face, thinking her mother was an impostor, and began to aimlessly hope for her mother’s return, and vowing to return her face upon their reunion. For safe keeping, Lisa attached her mother’s face to her own, wearing it like a mask.
Even after her mother’s death, Lisa continued to serve as a test subject for even more biological experiments. Unlike her fellow, more fortunate test subjects, Lisa was able to survive all of their tests, regardless of the potency of the implanted virus or parasite. This uncanny immunity earned the attention of Umbrella Corporation researchers, Albert Wesker and William Birkin, who injected their formidable guinea pig with a specimen of the Nemesis parasite. To their astonishment, Lisa not only overcame the specimen, but also managed to absorb it and adapt its powers into her system. Ultimately, this was a major breakthrough for the Umbrella Corporation, that would later go on to play a pivotal role in the engineering of the G-Virus.
After the G-Virus was extracted from Lisa, the Umbrella Corporation lost interest in her. As time passed, Lisa’s mutations and loneliness lead her to become increasingly violent. On one occasion, she brutally assaulted and killed three lab researchers. As Lisa was now seen a vestigial threat, Umbrella Corporation officials called for Lisa’s destruction. Sometime in 1995, Lisa was supposedly slain in an undisclosed area of Spencer’s estate. However, little did the Umbrella Corporation realize, the myriad of experiments conducted on Lisa had left her impervious to almost all forms of physical battery, rendering her impervious to all gunfire, to the extent an anti-tank missile, aside from swatting her against a wall, had little to no effect on the crawling abomination. Lisa would go on lurk through the catacombs of Spencer’s estate, secretly claiming residency in a neglected cabin.
How'd she get here to Silent Hill? No one is sure. But with the promise of the Halo of the Sun priestess Sister Claudia to raise the "Mother" of all, you can guess who's side Lisa is going to be on....
